I caught up with Rathiga Velalagan, a self-starting entrepreneur who embarked on her career as a paralegal in her early 20s and later established her own paralegal firm, JNR Legal Services PC, in her late 20s. A few years later, Rathiga ventured into the hospitality industry by opening the Shmooze Bar & Lounge, a unique establishment that blends Tamil culture, music, and fusion foods. Rathiga's professional journey and business ventures serve as a testament to her remarkable ability to overcome barriers in male-dominated sectors and carve out a successful path as a female entrepreneur. During the interview, I delved into Rathiga's strategies for success as a female entrepreneur, which I share in detail in this article.

Rathiga explains that she began her career as a law clerk and legal assistant at a prominent Law Firm. As her responsibilities grew in the role, she decided to initiate a conversation with one of the lawyers to discuss a salary increase. The response she received was: "Go to school, become a paralegal, and then we can discuss a pay raise." And Rathiga did precisely that. While still employed at the law firm, she enrolled in school for two years to obtain the necessary qualifications to become a paralegal.

After successfully completing her education, Rathiga possessed a unique advantage. She had gained practical experience, developed knowledge, acquired skills, and established valuable connections, enabling a smooth transition into the paralegal role. However, when Rathiga approached the same lawyers two years later armed with her newfound credentials, the firm displayed hesitation. They had not anticipated Rathiga's commitment to pursuing her education, and their uncertain response left her dissatisfied. Consequently, Rathiga made the difficult decision to resign from the firm.

Rathiga recognized the risks involved in her decision but remained steadfast in her determination to make the most of the situation. Over the next few months, she dedicated herself to meticulously piecing everything together and laying the foundation for her own firm. Alongside her business partner, Rathiga devoted countless hours to building a client base, working to bring their vision to fruition. After enduring numerous long hours of hard work, their efforts bore fruit, and JNR Legal Services PC was born.

As time progressed, Rathiga took a significant step forward in her entrepreneurial journey. She made the decision to purchase the firm from her partner, thereby becoming the sole owner of JNR Legal Services PC. This marked a significant milestone in Rathiga's professional trajectory, solidifying her position as a successful and independent entrepreneur.

Rathiga encountered her fair share of challenges, from quitting her job and establishing JNR Legal Services PC. However, she was well aware of the situation she found herself in. Rathiga faced mounting financial responsibilities and felt compelled to take the leap and establish her firm as the only viable means of overcoming these pressures. 

I make cut-throat decisions, and sometimes my parents tell me, 'You can't make decisions like that. You have to think it over,' but if you ponder over a decision for a long time, you'll never actually make a decision. That's why it's best to make a choice, trust yourself, and have faith that it will ultimately work out for the best, Rathiga explained.

Her firm conviction in her ability to make decisive choices and trust in her judgment has been a guiding principle throughout her entrepreneurial journey.

Ultimately, Rathiga's unwavering principles guided her to open the Shmooze Bar & Lounge. Initially, the restaurant didn't have a distinct theme, but Rathiga's deep love for Tamil music ignited an idea to center the establishment around Tamil culture. This transformative decision turned the restaurant into a Tamil-themed bar and lounge, where Tamil music takes center stage every day, with a focus on attracting and catering to the Tamil niche.

As the Shmooze Bar & Lounge began its journey, it opened its doors to notable Tamil individuals from the entertainment industry, such as Dj Incarnation, RLE, and 3Dsound, who lent their presence and support. Rathiga also used her establishment to create a forefront that unites Tamil women in the music industry, like DJ Kow and DJ Pista, prominent figures in the entertainment industry. These meaningful connections and collaborations have contributed to the success of Shmooze Bar & Lounge as a proudly Tamil-owned business.

In an industry heavily dominated by men, Rathiga faced numerous challenges, including earning respect from male entrepreneurs, networking, defying societal expectations, maintaining a work-life balance as a single mother, and managing the fear of failure. However, Rathiga persevered by embracing a powerful mantra: "Failure is not an option." Regardless of the circumstances, she remained faithful, disregarding criticisms and maintaining a firm belief in herself and her abilities.

Rathiga frequently encountered a particular question: "What are you doing in the bar industry? It's not suitable for Tamil women." However, she triumphed over such comments by dismissing them and placing her trust solely in herself. She refused to let societal expectations define her path, carving out her place in the industry with determination and self-assurance.

As Rathiga navigates the management of her paralegal firm during the day and her bar in the evenings, I was compelled to inquire, "How do you successfully manage both responsibilities and thrive as a single mother?" Rathiga elaborated on her approach, explaining that during the initial stages of establishing her businesses, she devoted all her time and energy to them. Surprisingly, she found pleasure in this intense dedication, which complemented her personal life. By putting in the hard work from the outset, Rathiga was able to assemble a reliable staff for both her firm and bar. Additionally, she built a strong support system comprised of friends and family. Through trial and error, Rathiga eventually discovered a rhythm that harmonized both her businesses, allowing her to effectively manage her responsibilities and excel in her role as a single mother. 

Rathiga always kept her motherhood at the forefront of her mind, recognizing that by working diligently in the present, she could secure a more relaxed and fulfilling future. She understood the importance of laying a solid foundation and building a lasting legacy for herself and her children. Her steadfast focus on motherhood served as a powerful motivation, fueling her determination and relentless efforts.

Driven by her firm commitment, Rathiga envisions the expansion of the Shmooze Bar & Lounge. Additionally, she plans to pursue her aspiration of obtaining a Law degree by returning to school. With her drive and determination, Rathiga sets her sights on further accomplishments and personal growth.

I asked Rathiga, "What advice would you give to those who aspire to pursue an entrepreneurial career?" Her response was resolute:

Do not accept 'no' as an answer. If you have made up your mind, go for it without hesitation. Do not doubt yourself, and do not let anyone discourage you. True supporters will stand by you." Rathiga firmly believes in upholding values such as integrity, honesty, loyalty, creativity, respect, patience, and compassion. These values serve as the bedrock of her success, with compassion holding particular significance. She emphasized, "A strong woman is often tough on herself. That's why it is crucial to be compassionate toward ourselves, as it enables us to extend kindness to others when we understand how to receive it.
