Prior to the Toronto screening of his film, Demons in Paradise, on Thursday February 22 at the Phoenix Concert Theatre, Sri Lankans Without Borders (SLWB) had the opportunity to sit down with Jude Ratnam, the Sri Lankan-based director of the acclaimed documentary which featured at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017. In this podcast, Jude reflects on his decade-long journey of making this film, his approach to documentary film-making and the variety of challenges associated with it in Sri Lanka, and the important role of the viewer in giving new life to art.
Jude Ratnam was five years old when he and his family boarded a red train from the Sinhalese-dominated south of Sri Lanka towards the Tamil stronghold of the North in search of sanctuary, only to find further conflict. Demons in Paradise follows Jude as he reflects on 30 years of war that gripped the country and left lasting scars on the island and its people.
