A Gentleman's Guide: Deodorant vs Cologne

Every day of my life in high school was spent walking through the halls with a splitting headache. Not just because high school was a miserable experience, but because of the amount of Axe body spray that lingered in the air.

It was the same thing every day, everyone would head to their lockers, spray themselves all over and head off their merry way. But the smell, that smell would linger in the halls for hours. I still have nightmares because of it.

YOUR DEODORANT SPRAY IS NOT COLOGNE!

Do you even know what the difference between them is?

Deodorant makes you not smell. Cologne makes you smell better. Spraying your deodorant all over your clothes doesn't do a thing. It's not your clothes that smell, unless you left your door open while Amma was cooking chicken curry. No. It's you that smells. You’ve spent the whole day running around doing stuff. You’re bound to start sweating. Your clothes aren’t sweating. It’s you that’s sweating. So what exactly are you thinking when you spray deodorant all over your clothes? You actually smell worse. Do you know what sweat mixed with deodorant smells like? I do and it smells like crap, it’s the stuff nightmares are made of.

Stop buying deodorant spray cans. Go buy a real stick of deodorant and apply it all over your armpits. Don't buy a scented one because once you start mixing scents you're in for a world of bad smells. You will stop smelling like road kill I promise. If you still smell, then maybe it's time you took a shower. Again use unscented soaps and shampoos. Unless you want to spend the whole day smelling like strawberries. I’ve been there before… it’s not fun.

On the other side, you should not use cologne as a substitute for deodorant. Deodorant is made with chemicals that make you stop sweating. Cologne is alcohol and water. See the difference?

Don't spray your cologne all over your clothes either. You're actually ruining the fabric and it’s going to leave stains. Apply cologne to wherever you can feel a heart beat. Go for your wrists and your neck. It helps carry the scent better and it mixes with your own pheromones that make a scent that is unique to you. Make sure you try to apply it after a shower. Your pores will be open and your skin will absorb it making you smell better longer.

Another tip is that you should never be able to smell yourself.  The last thing you want to do is to smell like you’ve been showering in cologne.

Finally, don’t overload on different smells. It’s great that you're wearing deodorant, cologne and after-shave. But if you’re going to use so many different products you might want to make sure that you don't smell like the perfume section at Sears. Use something neutral for the deodorant and the after-shave, then make things better by using the cologne.

Those are just my two scents.
