There is a common narrative that many of us who are Tamil share about our long journeys to Canada. Many of us have been arriving here for more than 30 years as immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers from Sri Lanka, leaving behind a country that stripped us of our civil liberties, placed limits on our economic prosperity, endangered our lives through genocidal violence, and created a deep fear and distrust of government. However, it is this very same painful past that Canadian Tamils resiliently survived that has also allowed us - like many others who settled in Canada - to truly understand the importance of ensuring a strong democracy in this country that protects individual rights and freedoms and upholds the rule of law.
As the Canadian Tamil community grows its roots in Ontario, Québec, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Alberta, so have our efforts to determine our political futures. In many ways, the Canadian Tamil political consciousness is inextricably linked to the three largest parties - starting with the Charter of Rights and Freedoms enshrined by the Pierre Trudeau government that deepened with the Special Measures Program enacted by the Brian Mulroney government in the early 1980s to welcome boatloads of Tamils fleeing Sri Lanka, which eventually saw the very first Canadian Tamil elected to the House of Commons as part of Jack Layton’s orange wave in 2011.
From amplifying marginalised voices and being an ally for other Canadians to engaging in critical dialogue about the issues that impact us, our community understands the importance of civic engagement in all forms. Canadian Tamils have successfully stood for elected office at all levels of government, secured key party leadership positions, and signed up for party membership in large numbers. The 43rd federal election, however, also marks another important milestone in the multi-hued Canadian Tamil story.
#TamilVote2019 is a first-of-its-kind, non-partisan Get Out the Vote (GOTV) campaign being undertaken within the Canadian Tamil community. Led by a new generation of community organisers, the campaign is aimed at increasing Tamil voter turnout in this year's federal election by focusing on youth and women, seniors, small businesses, creatives, and workers. It is a concerted effort to increase the knowledge of Canadian Tamils about electoral processes above and beyond party politics, and help build long-term, open and transparent political capacity for the community. This campaign complements other GOTV campaigns within the community and also supports a broader coalition with other allies - especially Black, Muslim, and Sikh Canadians - to ensure that racialised and Indigenous voices are not missing from political decision-making.
Elections are not just about platforms, promises, and provocations. It is about imagining a country that we have the privilege and responsibility to build for our generation and those who will come after us. When Canadian Tamils line up to vote on October 21, 2019, it is both our resilient past and our shared vision for the future that we should keep in mind when we cast our ballot.

கனடியத் தமிழ்ச் சமூகம் ஒன்ராரியோ, கியூபெக், பிரிட்டிஷ் கொலம்பியா, மனிடோபா, அல்பேர்ட்டா ஆகிய இடங்களில் வேர்விடும் அதேநேரம் எங்கள் அரசியல் எளில்திர்காலங்களைத் தீர்மானிப்பதற்கான எமது முயற்சிகளும் வேர் கொண்டு வருகின்றன. பல வகைகளில் கனடியத் தமிழ் உணர்வு பெரிய மூன்று கட்சிகளுடனும் பிரிக்க முடியாதவாறு இணைந்துள்ளது. பியர் ட்ரூடோவின் அரசாங்கத்தினால் கொண்டுவரப்பட்ட உரிமைகள், சுதந்திரங்களின் சாசனத்தில் ஆரம்பித்து 1980களில் படகுகளில் இலங்கையை விட்டு வந்த தமிழர்களினை வரவேற்பதற்காக பிரயன் மல்ரோனியின் அரசாங்கத்தினால் நடைமுறைப்படுத்தப்பட்ட விசேட நடைமுறைத் திட்டதோடு ஆழம் கண்ட நம் உணர்வு பின்னர் 2011 இல் ஜக் லேய்ற்றனின் செம்மஞ்சள் அலையின் ஒரு பகுதியாகப் பொதுச்சபைக்குத் தேர்வு செய்யப்பட்ட முதலவது கனடியத் தமிழரையும் கண்டது.
விளிம்பு நிலைப்படுத்தப்பட்ட குரல்களை உரக்கச்செய்வது, மற்றைய கனடியர்களுடன் நட்பு நிலை கொள்வது, எங்கள் எல்லாரையும் பாதிக்கும் பிரச்சனைகளைப் பற்றிய முக்கிய உரையாடல்களில் பங்குகொள்வது என சகல வடிவங்களிலுமான குடிமக்கள் ஊடாட்டத்தின் முக்கியத்துவத்தையும் தேவையையும் எம் சமூகம் புரிந்து கொள்கிறது. அதனால், கனடாவில் நாம் அனுபவிக்கும் ஜனநாயக உரிமைகளைப் பாதுகாப்பதற்கு எழுந்து நிற்பதற்கு உறுதி கொண்டுள்ளோம். கனடியத்தமிழர் அரசாங்கத்தின் எல்லா மட்டங்களிலும் வாக்களர்களால் தேர்வு செய்யப்படும் பதவிகளை வெற்றிகரமாக வகித்து, முக்கிய கட்சித் தலைமைப் பதவிகளை பெற்று, கட்சி உறுப்பினர்களாகப் பெருந்தொகையில் இணைந்துமுள்ள்ளளனர். அத்துடன் பல்நிறம் கொண்ட கனடியத் தமிழ்க்க் கதையாடலில் 43வது கனடியத் தேசிய தேர்தல் முக்கிய மைகல்லாகவும் விளங்குகின்றது.
#தமிழ்வாக்கு2019 என்பது தமிழ்க் கனேடிய சமூகத்தில் முதற் தடவையாக நடைபெறும், பக்கச்சார்பற்ற, வாக்கிடலை ஊக்குவிக்கும் ஒரு பரப்புரைச்செயற்பாடு. புதிய தலைமுறை சமூக ஒருங்கிணைப்பாளர்கர்களால் முன்னெடுக்கப்பட்டும் இந்தப் பரப்புரைச் செயற்பாடு இளையோர், பெண்கள், சிறிய வணிகங்கள், கலைஞர்கள், தொழிலாளர்கள் ஆகியோரை முக்கியத்துவப்படுத்தி இந்த தேசிய தேர்தலில் தமிழர்கள் வாக்களிக்கும் வீதத்தை அதிகரிப்பதனை நோக்கமாகக் கொண்டுள்ளது. இது கட்சி அரசியலுக்கு மேலாக தேர்தல் முறைமை பற்றிய கனடியத் தமிழர்களின் அறிவினை வளர்ப்பதற்கும் நீண்டகால, வெளிப்படையான, அரசியல் இயலுமையை சமூகத்த்திதிடம் வளர்க்க உதவுவதற்குமான ஒருங்கிணைக்கப்பட்ட முயற்சியாகும். எவ்வாறாயினும் எனது வாக்கே எமது பலம். இந்தப் பரப்புரை, சமுகத்தில் இருக்கும் ஏனைய வாக்களிப்பை ஊக்குவிக்கும் பரப்புரைகளுடக்கு குறை நிரப்பியாக இருப்பதுடன் எனைய நட்பு வட்டத்தைச்சேர்ந்த முக்கியமாக, கறுப்பின, முஸ்லிம், சீக்கிய கனடியர்களுடனான பரந்த கூட்டமைப்பை ஆதரிக்கிறது. இனரீதியான மற்றும் ஆதிக்குடி மக்களின் குரல்கள் அரசியல் முடிவெடுப்பின் போது காணாமல் போய்விடாதிருப்பதற்கு இது அவசியம்.
தேர்தல் என்பது கொள்கை நிலைப்பாடு, உறுதிமொழிகள், உணர்வூட்டுகைகள் மட்டுமல்ல. எமது தலைமுறைக்கும் எமக்குப் பிறகு வருவோருக்குமாக நாம் கட்டியெழுப்புவதற்கு கடமையும் சிறப்புரிமையும் கொண்டிருக்கும் ஒரு நாட்டினைக் கற்பனை செய்தல். ஒக்ரோபர் 21, 2019ம் திகதி தமிழர்கள் வாக்களிக்க வரிசையில் நிற்கும் போது, வாழ்திறனுடனான எமது இறந்த காலத்தையும் எதிர்காலத்துக்கான இணைந்த நோக்கினையும் எங்கள் மனதில் வைத்து வாக்கினை அளிக்கவேண்டும்.
