We all love presents. Adults, teenagers, children. For Christmas, for birthdays, for the no particular occasion. That excitement as we unwrap it before the moment we finally see what it is. It has been a very difficult year for all of us, lockdowns, time apart from families and friends, furlough schemes, illness and even deaths. But many of us have been fortunate in the western world with governmental support, feasibility to study or work from home and technology to keep us virtually connected with our loved ones. But it hasn’t been so easy for children growing up in poverty in rural parts of North and East Sri Lanka. With schools closed and livelihoods in question, it has been even more difficult for these children.
So the Smile for Sri Lanka Shoebox Appeal has partnered with Serendip Children’s Home, a charity registered in the UK and Sri Lanka, to deliver smiles to these children. We are asking for a donation of £10; half of this will be used to put together a shoebox of gifts (school supplies, toys and sweets) for a child and the other half to support a Serendip project for children with disabilities. Why a shoebox? Traditionally at Christmas, children and adults recycle an old shoebox into a wrapped present box, which they then fill with gifts and a Christmas gift for a child somewhere in the world to enjoy. This is transported and delivered to children in need globally. However, this year with lockdowns continuing, the Serendip Children’s Home team are buying all the items in Jaffna and building the shoebox for you. This is also better value for money and helps struggling local businesses. The picture shows an example made by the Serendip team in Sri Lanka.
The other half of your donation will go towards projects for children with disabilities. Serendip Children’s Home do a range of work with special schools, homes and individual families to provide support to these children to achieve a better chance in life. Projects include providing special school facilities, specialist teacher training, arts and music lessons and livelihood support for families to manage the financial pressures of their child’s needs.
