The US Census board is starting to track how many people speak Tamil, along with Punjabi, Telugu and Bengali, as of last week. Previously, there was no easy way to determine how many Americans spoke Tamil. This change comes as South Asians' and Tamils' ranks in the US grows.

Here are just some of the well known American public figures with a Tamil background:

Sundar Pichai, the head of Google

Indira Nooyi, the CEO of Pepsico

Aziz Ansari, an Actor

Mindy Kaling, an Actress and Producer

Kamala Harris, Senator

The preservation of the Tamil language, through the establishment of a Tamil Chair at Harvard University, has been a priority for the international Tamil community. Through the Harvard Tamil Chair, they are on a mission to raise $6 million.

Kettikari
I'm Bruno, and I'm a kettikaran. Kettikaran is a Tamil masculine word used to describe a male who is successful at achieving something great; in other words, a winner (kettikari for females). For the last few months, this is what a few elders within the Sri Lankan-Tamil community have been telling me - that I’m a winner. No, I didn’t receive a scholarship to school; I didn’t score the winning goal to help my team win the league trophy; I didn’t discover a medical breakthrough. So, what did I do to be bathed with such a commemorative label? Well, I fathered a son as my first child.
