While pongal is popularly celebrated by Tamil communities and governments in eastern countries like India and Sri Lanka, western leaders such as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada and Theresa May of the UK are also starting to share their pongal wishes - a sign of the growing influence and recognition of Tamil communities in the west.
