Rajinikanth, arguably the most popular Tamil celebrity in the world, has announced that he is entering Southern Indian politics by forming his own political party, calling it his duty.

Born as Shivaji Rao Gaekwad, Rajinikanth, now 67, worked as a bus conductor in Bangalore prior to moving to Chennai to pursue an acting career, resulting in over 200 films since 1975, many of which have broken box-office records. He is a household name with Tamils, both young and old, around the world.

He is often referred to as 'The Superstar' and continues to be one of the most popular Tamil actors around.

"If I don't take this decision now, the guilt will haunt me," he said, adding: "I am not doing it for any post or money or fame as I have enough."
