Uma Kumaran is a British-Tamil politician and Labour Party MP, representing Stratford and Bow since July 2024. Her election marked a significant milestone as she became one of the first British-Tamil MPs after a landslide victory for her party.

Born in East London to Sri Lankan Tamil refugees, Uma is a former Director of Diplomatic and International Relations for the Co-Chairs of the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group. In this role, she collaborated with nearly 100 global mega city mayors, governors, their teams, the United Nations, Bloomberg Philanthropies, and several leading advocacy organizations to campaign for stronger, bolder action to tackle climate change.
Uma also served as the Deputy Director of Parliamentary Affairs for the Leader of the Opposition, where she played a key role behind the scenes preparing for Prime Minister's Questions (PMQs). Additionally, she was an adviser to the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan.
With over 16 years of experience in political strategy and high-level advisory roles, Uma has worked for the last Labour Government, in local government, and at the heart of London government in City Hall. Her early career included positions within the NHS and volunteering as a hospital radio DJ.
Her recent win marks a significant milestone for the British-Tamil community and reflects increasing diversity in British politics.
