First Date Dos and Don'ts for Guys
A few pointers from a lady!

Guys, you know you’ve been here at least a few times in your life. Acting all nonchalant but secretly thinking about how things are going to play out and whether or not you’re going to go in for a kiss. Yes, I am talking about going on a first date. Having heard some first date success and horror stories, I’ve compiled a list of Do’s and Don’ts to help you boys out a bit. Trust me, if you want your date to go well, you should take notes! However, I can’t make any promises for a second date. Earn some points doing the following:

  1. DO pay for the date. As much as we are moving towards gender equality, there are a lot of women that expect a guy to pay for the first date. It’s a really nice gesture and shows that you’re investing more than just time into the date.
  2. DO throw in some subtle compliments. Make sure they are sincere of course. This shows a girl that you are interested. Even though actions speak louder than words, it’s nice to hear the words also.
  3. DO throw in a funny story or two about your family doing things that your date’s family probably also did. It will make her laugh for sure. Saturday morning garage sales anyone?
  4. DO arrive on time for the date. If you’re meeting at a predetermined location make sure you get there before her. You should be okay if you arrive right on time (girls typically arrive just a bit late so that they are not left waiting on a street corner for you).
A few things to avoid for a smooth night:
  1. DON'T ask questions about what village your date’s family is from. It might be seen as totally old school and kind of a strange thing to talk about during date #1. So, save that discussion for another time.
  2. DON'T all of a sudden switch to speaking Tamil unless you know she’s comfortable with it. It could lead to a severely awkward moment if your date is not expecting a language shift.
  3. DON'T let your eyes wander. There may be TVs, other people, nice cars, etc., around but try not to get distracted. Wandering eyes can lead to the presumption that you are not interested even if you really are.
It’s important to remember to let the date flow. Don’t force it and just have fun. Get to know your lady. Remember, going on a first date no longer equates to wedding bells. It may have been so 10 years ago but times have now changed. So just have fun. Be your charming self. Don’t sweat it and if it is meant to be it will be! - Serena Mohandran Have a few tips of your own? We would love to hear them! Kettikari
I'm Bruno, and I'm a kettikaran. Kettikaran is a Tamil masculine word used to describe a male who is successful at achieving something great; in other words, a winner (kettikari for females). For the last few months, this is what a few elders within the Sri Lankan-Tamil community have been telling me - that I’m a winner. No, I didn’t receive a scholarship to school; I didn’t score the winning goal to help my team win the league trophy; I didn’t discover a medical breakthrough. So, what did I do to be bathed with such a commemorative label? Well, I fathered a son as my first child.
