10-year-old Nilaksan Rajkumar Aces Math Competition, Answering 200 Questions in 8 Minutes

Nilaksan Rajkumar aced an international math competition by answering 200 questions in 8 minutes. Pretty impressive! The 10-year-old math whiz is a Grade 5 student at Michaelle Jean P.S. in Ajax (Ontario, Canada) and travelled to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in December to compete in the UCMAS International Competition along with thousands of other students.

UCMAS is a math enrichment program that helps students do “mental math” — solving complex calculations in their head without using a calculator.

Nilaksan had the following to say during an interview with DurhamRegion.com:

“I was pretty scared and nervous,” Nilaksan says. “They have a whistle that they blow to start the competition … and then you just have to start and be focused. If I didn't know an answer right away, I put a dash next to it to come back.”

Nilaksan succeeded in answering all 200 questions and finished in second place for his skill level — no small feat.

“I felt happy,” he says with a smile.

"I was born and raised in Toronto’s west-end in the Jane and Falstaff neighbourhood. Much of what shaped my decision to go into journalism stemmed from my childhood there as well as my Tamil roots. For all the good that came from living in that community, many outsiders only knew it for the bad: the drugs, the crime, the shootings. And why not? It felt like news organizations ventured north of the 401 only when there was a murder or a shooting."
